    Just imagine the profit the Solent Steam Packet Co would make if they had Waverley instead of Shieldhall


    I see they don't try and get Gift Aid on fares (or split admittance and transport), but they have a box on their ticketing site for you to make an optional (but additional) donation at the time of purchase (which can be Gift Aided)

    I always said that the Shieldhall people do it right - but perhaps they are missing a trick on GA !

    WSN/WEL automatically class the £17.50 admittance element of your fare as a donation even though they do not fulfill the generally-applicable rules which define what a donation must be in order for charities to do so. This means that any Gift Aid form you sign and any claim they make on HMRC would appear to be invalid. WSN refuse to explain why they believe their approach is in compliance with the law

    And they dont have to bus passengers about on cancellations
