The KINGSWEAR CASTLE doesn't start till 26 May which is the beginning of a Bank Holiday weekend and, in many areas, the start of the school half-term holiday. The WAVERLEY's season begins on 25 May this year. Waverley Excursions got the idea that there was no market for trips in May in the years when the WAVERLEY's timetable was published in April. I remember at least two seasons when she turned up in the south of England before any timetables had been distributed. It was hardly surprising that the early season sailings were so poorly supported, but I cannot believe there are many people who would rather go for a boat trip in October than in May or June.

.... but the company which operates KC runs services for much of the year and therein lies the difference

Expensive to operate units were always summer butterflies (or brought into service as relief vessels if needed), so it is maybe a little surprising that KC starts as early in the season as she does

In Switzerland, although there are loads of steamers in operation late June to mid August, there is a very much restricted usage of these units in pre- and post- high-season and nothing much else apart from a possible Xmas to New Year special.... but still plenty of action for the "lower cost" units. Fortunately Lake Geneva's motorised paddlers get year-round operation based on their attractive cost base and perceived attractiveness to customers !

There is more chance of nice weather on the Clyde in May/June than in August.

A properly marketed programme of long weekend sailings - perhaps the normal Fri(senior citizen special)/Sat/Sun with some Monday specials to less usual destinations particularly on the bank holidays should succeed.

With some effort to attract school parties midweek on cheap to operate tail of the bank educational trips (perhaps they've tried this, but how do we know they're so secretive and defensive) this early season would be profitable.

With the BC and South Coast now being sidelined make the Thames programme mid September and back to the Clyde for the September holiday weekend and no sailing in dodgy October!

P.S. Sorry I suppose this should be on the Waverley 2018 thread!

The cruises on Kingswear Castle are fairly short and have the added attraction of the steam train from Paignton . With quite a large population base within easy reach the short cruises should appeal to a lot of folk. Kingswear Castle should have good loadings throughout her season from May to September. A small vessel with a nice wee bar and so on.
Compare this with the loooong days on the Waverley which can become an endurance test.

That's why I never sail from Glasgow - but many seem to like it, so I guess it can be said that she caters for all tastes and markets (as she has to to keep reasonably filled)

It is encouraging that the Dart people see a real benefit of KC to their overall operation
