Naval auxilliary steamer called Freshspring. She is currently languishing on the banks of the Severn at Newnham on Severn. She is afloat and in remarkable condition having been completely refitted prior to sale in the 1970s. Unless something is done to save her in the near future she will broken up. She is 100% steam and originally coal fired. The boiler was re tubed and only steamed a couple of times since. It has been dried and a preservative added.

They need people to attend a meeting to determine the future of the ship
The meeting is to be held on 29th September at The Ship Inn, Newnham on Severn GL14 1BY at 2.00pm

Thanks for the info GT, Freshspring is vessel worthy of being saved, lets hope enough support is given at the meeting and way of saving this ship can be found. I think this is really Freshsprings last chance.

Morning all, newbie here, I'm part of the Freshspring group, if anyone wants to make contact re the Freshspring then feel free to e-mail me direct rozm2@hotmail.com I'm in the process of putting a new website together with plenty of pictures, anyone's welcome to come to the meeting, we hope to have a few artefacts there from onboard along with a set of plans for her (well, sister ship actually but I suspect they were built to the same spec). All support very gratefully received, she's a truly amazing survivor, the best description is, think Sheildhall and half everything, one boiler, one engine, very similar auxiliaries, half the length etc

If anyone is attending some up to date pictures would be nice; the ones online are a bit old. I'd do it myself but I live in Scotland.

Another newbie here, I've recently started volunteering on the Freshspring as they now have regular working parties on Wednesday evenings from 7pm at Collow Pill, just outside Newnham on Severn.

Mark (rozm2) has also created a new website for the Freshspring, which can be found at http://ssfreshspring.co.uk/ and will hopefully carry progress updates. I could keep you up to date with progress on this site also if you want

Will do George, to quote the website;

After the very successful meeting on the 29th September the project is gaining real momentum, firstly a structure is being put in place to put ownership of the Freshspring into a charitable trust or similar in order to make her as attractive as possible to potential funding bodies. On a similar note a survey is being organised, firstly as she lies, with an initial inspection of her hull, then if all goes well, to build a gridiron at her current location to allow a full survey and remedial works to be undertaken. Martyn Heighton from National Historic ships was present at the meeting and is keen to assist with some of the funding for these works.
On the other side of things works on-board have began in earnest, in addition to the usual visits during the week a group has been formed who meet on-board on Wednesday evenings, thus far, due to the dark, our work has mainly consisted of getting more of the electrical system working again, with the captains cabin now added to the list of areas where the lights work, leaving nowhere on-board 'in the dark'.

Just a quick update, work on board has slowed for the moment as we fabricate a more satisfactory gangway and the ship is moved into a charitable trust. If you know anyone who we should be approaching to become a trustee, please feel free to message me.
