31st August 2014 Nelson’s Schooner Pickle relishes a new future. The tall ship Schooner Pickle has changed ownership. Robin James, who's family has owned Schooner Pickle for the past 9 years has sold the affectionately named Pickle to Mal Nicholson the owner of another historic vessel the Spidert. https://www.facebook.com/schoonerpickle

Monday looks set to be our first sea trial on HMS Pickle, to bunker up or refuel, put her through her paces and see what she does. I have purchased all the sea charts to plot our course and wonder how she will handle compared with the Spider T?
Final preparations are now under way for stowage, provisions and crewing for what must be an epic voyage for historic reasons and a great adventure for the crew.
Talks at high levels both here in Gibraltar and the UK are discussing various plans to mark this voyage by HMS Pickle including sending out a flotilla to greet her when approaching the UK and following the voyage by media aswell as farewell parties at Ocean Village.
It has become more than obvious that the Gibraltarians do not want HMS Pickle to leave and we know that sad faces will be seen on both sides, theirs and ours as we have made good friends and been made very welcome.

Drama on the high sea off Cape Trafalgar.

You are all probably aware now of the situation that took place three miles off shore of Trafalgar when the main mast broke below the cross trees and severely damaged all top rigging. It was caused by internal wood rot and thankfully we were not using any sail.the coastguard was allerted and a support vessel was launched from Barbate. It was very dangerous and challenging for us all with huge weight hanging by a thread as we gingerly made our way to Cadiz to effect repairs. The slow progress was to reduce any chance of the whole lot coming down in the rough seas....taking it easy.
We are now in Porto Sherry in the Bay of Cadiz making repairs.

in the repair dock in peurto sherry, looking better after 2 days hard graft

Day 6: More hard graft by the crew of Pickle and the pictures shows her new look and the extent of the damage as well as the crew still in fine spirits . Expected to head back to sea on Saturday with the good news that the damage and repairs made has made her safer and more stable.

Pleased to see the damage isn't too extensive. Have known the ship well and sailed on her a few times.

Update Mal Nicholson

After the recent incidents regarding the vessel and the very changeable weather, I have decided to stay at Vilamoura for repairs. As I also have friends here and it will help get her watertight on the decks and protect her.
The crew are going home for a while and returning when we set sail again.
The main generator needs a rebuild the head gasket was blown as soon as I got it going so Kev and I will get it sorted next week. Roger is a carpenter and is going to help with various jobs and Val may join me for a holiday which after the flooding and sheer destruction of our home and business she is well and truly ready for a break.

Mal Nicholson bought HMS Pickle in Gibraltar in July 2014. Whilst bringing her back to the UK she suffered damage off of the Cape of Trafalgar and limped in Cadiz for repairs. Initial repairs enabled her to get to Vilamoura, Portugal where she has stayed over the winter. Unfortunately the bill for repairs has mounted up and this appeal video shows the extent of the works required to get her in a sea worthy state.

HMS Pickle was transformed today with a simple few coats of paint. The starboard side had final undercoats and then top coats applied. The crew saw for the first time her true colours when the black and bamboo were applied to give her an amazing look in the sunshine of Portugal. Still a lot to be done before Friday's launch day

The replica of HMS Pickle, which was docked in Gibraltar at Ocean Village for two years, continues to fascinate many both here and abroad. The original vessel brought news of the death of Lord Nelson. Works have been on going on HMS Pickle, refurbishing her and keeping her mobile.

Well, the Pickle has arrived in Keadby. Unfortunately, it was just too late to be able to go through the lock so has been moored at the dock south of the lock on the Trent. About 50-60 spectators turned up to see her. Sails were lowered as they attempted to prepare to go into the lock, but unfortunately, as mentioned, they were just too late and the lock gates had to be closed, so the crew had to prepare to dock in the alternative mooring instead which was rather dicey as they almost smashed the bow into the dock but thankfully that was averted but trust me it was a VERY close shave. So, they'll be moving her through the lock tomorrow morning instead.

Three photos...

A HISTORIC schooner is now moored in her new home in Keadby.

HMS Pickle is the only sailing replica of a vessel from the Napoleonic era and it famously brought back the news of the Battle of Trafalgar victory to England.

Update from Facebook
Today we are preparing to set sail on HM Schooner Pickle on Saturday at 08.00 from Hull Marina to Whitby where it will be the first time ever she has been north of the Humber.
Past experiences with Humber Super Sloop Spider T have been fantastic at Whitby with a very warm welcome.
We will remain in Whitby until Tuesday when we will let go the lines and head to Hartlepool for an official invitation to join the fabulous warship Hms Trincomalee for the Bank Holiday weekend...... Watch this space for more photos and updates!

HMS Pickle, the fabulous recreation of the Royal Navy topsail schooner of the same name, which delivered the news of the victory of the British Fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Nelson to the Admiralty in London, received a great invitation today.
The Tall Ships Team at Blyth has invited Pickle to make a special guest appearance at the North Sea Tall Ships Regatta at Blyth this weekend.
Just a short sail up the coast from Hartlepool, skipper Mal Nicholson is planning to head up to Blyth at first light Saturday morning and return to Hartlepool around midday Monday.
“The interest in Pickle from the people of the north east has been enormous” said Mal “and it’s vital that those who want to have a look round her, have every opportunity”. Pickle will be available to view at Hartlepool Marina until dusk on Friday this week. The next opportunity is at The Tall Ships Regatta at Blyth on Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday and then back at Hartlepool Marina on Monday afternoon until dusk.
Pickle will slip her moorings very early on Tuesday 30 August to head back to her home port of Hull.
This will give the public additional opportunities to see Pickle under full sail. Mal expects to be firing the ship’s cannons to announce her return to Hartlepool on Monday lunchtime. There is plenty of parking and viewing points at Hartlepool Marina.
